Story

Sun Bin was a descendant of Sun Wu, the man who wrote The Art of War. He studied strategy beside Pang Juan — and Pang Juan, once he held a command in Wei, had his old classmate's kneecaps cut out rather than let him be used by anyone else.

He got out of Wei in a cart, hidden by an envoy of Qi. In Qi he won the trust of the general Tian Ji with a horse race that looked like a certain loss: send the worst horse against their best, then win the other two. Three races, three wins, nothing bought.

In 354 BC Wei's army had Handan surrounded. Sun Bin did not march on Handan. He struck at Wei's own capital instead, and Pang Juan had to turn his army around — the siege lifted itself. Twelve years later at Maling, Sun Bin had his men count the campfires down from a hundred thousand to thirty thousand a night. Pang Juan, sure that Qi's soldiers were deserting, raced ahead with the fast troops and rode into the ambush.
